"Henna, this form of natural and temporary body art, has been a passion for me since I was very young. My first designs were simple lines and happy faces, drawn with a $2 plastic henna cone I bought from the local Indian store. I was intensely frustrated with these lines but, for whatever reason, found it satisfying to sit hours on end, scribbling away. Several years later, some kind friends asked me to do their bridal henna, giving me the confidence to try this 'henna thing' professionally... the rest, as they say, is history!"

About the Art: Natural Henna

Natural henna is a painless and temporary form of body art, with rich traditions in many cultures across the world

But what is it exactly that goes onto your skin? Henna (scientific name, Lawsonia Intermis) is a paste made from the dried and crushed up leaves of the 'henna plant.' The leaves of this plant contain a red dye (called Lawsone) which is what stains the skin. The leaves are dried then crushed into fine powder, the powder sifted, and then mixed with a variety of ingredients (essential oils, lemon juice or tea or water, sugar) to create a smooth paste. This paste is then put into an applicator (a henna cone or jacquard bottle), which allows the artist to create fine, precise lines.

After the paste is applied onto the skin, it dries (about 20-30 mins); it is recommended to keep the dry paste on the skin and away from water for 6-8 hours. When the paste comes off, a beautiful 'henna stain' is left behind.

The best part? Natural henna is 100% safe and temporary. As your skin exfoliates, the henna stain wears off...which means you can get something new and unique each time!
